Fancy a Grätzl tour of Vienna? Then be sure to visit the 23rd district!

Located in the south west of Vienna, the fifth largest district in Vienna, Liesing, has so much to offer. Whether you want to discover the sweet side of Vienna in the Chocolate Museum or follow the Liesingbach on a historical tour of discovery through Liesing’s castles, below we reveal to you what you absolutely must see in the 23rd district.

1. Discover Liesing's castles

First recorded in documents dating from the 14th Century, Liesing castle is now a popular destination for young and old alike. Surrounded by a beautiful park and a moat, the surrounding area is absolutely perfect for walks. But this is not the only castle that the 23rd district has to offer: the Rodaun Castle and Alterlaa Castle with its extensive parks are also worth a visit.

2. Hike on City Hiking Trail 6

The Vienna ‘Stadtwanderweg 6’ starts directly at Rodaun, the terminus of tram line 60. You pass by some of the 23rd district’s highlights on a track almost 12 kilometres in length, from the Wotrubakkirche and the Pappelteich to the Sterngarten Georgenberg open-air planetarium. Of course, your physical well-being is guaranteed thanks to a large number of noisy Heurigen (wine taverns) in Kalksburg, Rodaun and Perchtoldsdorf.

3. Stop by in Liesing’s restaurants

Culinary delights are also well worth your money in Liesing. After a long (or not so long) hike you are certain to find a suitable place to satisfy your hunger in the 23rd district, be it home-cooked meals at the Heuriger Edlmoser wine tavern, Asian in the Restaurant Stammhaus or fine culinary creations from the haute cuisine menu available at the Restaurant Stasta. In Liesing you will find something for every taste.

4. Marvel at the architecture of the Wotruba church

As mentioned above, you pass by the Wotruba church, among other things, on a hike along City Hiking Trail 6. And thanks to its extraordinary architecture, it is really difficult to overlook. The Roman Catholic Church is made up of blocks of raw concrete stacked on top of each other. A church in this design is rarely seen – so it is not only worth a visit for architecture fans!

5. A visit to the Chocolate Museum

If you prefer to eat calories instead of burning them, then you’ll feel right at home in the Schokommuseum Heindl. In Vienna’s sweetest museum, you will not only learn a lot about chocolate and cocoa but can also taste fine chocolate specialities. From Thursday to Saturday you can either explore the museum on your own or take a guided tour through the world of chocolate.
